Should a Blogger Wait for the Steady Flow of Traffic to Website or Pay for It?

Paying for traffic is literally a gamble that I wouldn’t advise, especially if you’re a new author. Even if authors use pay-per-click advertising like Google Ads for brand awareness, we simply don’t have the budget to successfully do it. It would take on average hundreds of thousands of dollars for a blog to go viral with paying for ads, and the vast majority of new authors can’t afford that much of an expense to their budgets.

Search Engines

My experience with paying for advertising to make my blog popular hasn’t been good―I spent a couple of grand overall, but it only gave me a temporary spike in traffic. And it didn’t increase my AdSense revenue, either. The only way pay-per-click ads would be a worthwhile investment to an author’s blog is when the profit margin of a product that’s being sold on a website offsets the cost of advertising. Most books don’t have a high profit margin, especially if you’re a fiction author, so buying advertising isn’t worth it in my opinion.

So, should authors wait for their blogs to get popular or buy traffic? The answer is simple―continue to post on your blog regularly―even if each article doesn’t yield any traffic at first. You will start to see more organic traffic in about eleven months―Google and other search engines like Yahoo, Bing, and DuckDuckGo need to see if your blog is relevant, so be consistent with writing at least five to ten posts per month.
