Five Reasons Why a Book Doesn't Sell

There are five main reasons why a book doesn’t sell on Amazon or any other online platform. One doesn’t become a bestselling author overnight, but this goal can be reached a lot sooner with the right information.

    Bad Book Cover.

A reader shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but the fact of the matter is that most people will or won’t purchase a book based on how the book cover looks. I remember the excitement that I felt when I self-published my first book and tried to create the cover myself with Amazon’s software, and I had published it during the infancy of Amazon KDP. I initially had a lot of downloads both free and paid, but I wasn’t able to sustain the momentum mainly because of my inexperience with book marketing and cruddy book cover. I didn’t garner enough book sales to catapult me to the next level, and ultimately, my book sales would soon suffer significantly because of my lack of graphic design skills.

    Poorly Written Book.

A bad book won’t sell for long even if an author has a great marketing plan. I believe that writers can develop their skills with thousands of hours of practice and dedication, and I’m living proof of that. My storytelling skills weren’t good in the beginning of my writing career, but I put in the sweat equity to become decent and respected in my craft.

Angry Writer

    Bad Editing.

There’s probably nothing worse than the bad editing of a book because most people will put it down after the first chapter if there are too many typos. An author should make use of the Read Aloud and Editor features in the Review section of Microsoft Word and/or hire a freelance proofreader to polish up the manuscript.

    Lack of Marketing Plan.

I didn’t have a clue how to market my first book, and it took years for me to create an effective marketing plan that earned me a steady stream of sales. An author can’t expect to upload their work on Amazon and hope for the best―multiple strategies are needed to be successful such as social media, advertising, and a website for example.

    Poor Work Ethic.

More than one book written is needed for an author to be successful online. Lightning only strikes for a handful of writers like E.L. James, who wrote Fifty Shades of Grey, but the vast majority of us have to put in the work with multiple books and series in order to have consistent sales on Amazon and other platforms for indie authors.

Once an author identifies and eliminates these five issues that thwart sales, elevation to new heights in writing will ultimately take place. Some level of success can and will be achieved in due time, as Rome wasn’t built in a day.
